Workshop: Creating Documentary Theater with the Means of the Interview Technique
This workshop provides insight into creating documentary theater using the interview technique and enables participants to later apply this method to groups they wish to work with. In an intensive documentary theater workshop, participants develop short theater scenes on the theme of “eternal cycle” and fill this concept with their own experiences, desires and interview material. The participants create a questionnaire on the topic and interview each other as well as passers-by on the street or experts. The collected material, as well as their own thoughts on the topic and related texts, then form the basis for the creation of theater scenes using the means of text, choreography, music, dance, object theater and other related arts. At the end of the workshop there will be a short, internal presentation of the scenes.
The method of documentary theater can later be applied to very different groups of participants such as theater educators, young people, older people, people with knowledge of special professions, experts, teachers and others. The method is also empowering the idea of democratic processes and finding an opinion. The answers from the interviews serve as a basis and authentic material to write a textbook and a script that will later be put on stage.
